As the tradition has been practiced for generations there are many different styles and designs that have been created.

The following article describes some popular designs of Persian rugs.

Afghan Carpets

Afghan carpets are internationally recognised for their high levels of quality. Afghan carpets stand out and feature detailed patterns with a bold use of colour.

Based on traditional designs, Afghan carpets draw their inspiration from the peoples of various Persian tribes including the Yomut, Salor and Tekke tribes. One of the most popular patterns is the Bukhara design which has an octagonal centrepiece resembling an elephants foot. Locally obtained vegetable dyes are used to produce Afghan carpets in a variety of bold colours. Afghan carpets are often made from red fabric featuring the Bukhara design.

Afghans carpets are an elite decoration for homes. To some people Afghan carpets are an investment. Good quality Afghan carpets go for high prices and if well preserved will increase in value over time.

Isfahan Rugs

Isfahan is an Iranian city with a rich history of Persian rug production. Between the sixteenth and eighteenth century Isfahan enjoyed a prolific spell of producing rugs. This came to an end when Iran was invaded by Afghanistan and production slowed to a stop.

The tradition for Isfahani rugs was rekindled in the early twentieth century. Local designers harked back to the traditional designs which made a welcome return. Isfahani rugs still remain popular today, particularly with people in the western world who the traditional designs are still new to.

Isfahani rugs are identifiable by their colour schemes. Designs commonly feature off white backings with blues and mauves commonly used for central decorations. The quality of weaving is usually much higher with the emphasis placed on the quality of the weave over the artistic depictions of colour schemes and motifs.

Heriz

persian rug typesHeriz is a region in Iran that is renowned for its distinctive Persian rugs. Heriz rugs are extremely hard wearing and are recognised as a national standard for durability.

The secret to the high quality of Heriz rugs is the wool that is used. Sheep in the Heriz region graze around Mount Sabalan. The area around Mount Sabalan is high in copper deposits which appear in the water. This copper is consumed in the sheeps drinking water and increases the strength of the wool.

Heriz rugs are competitively priced, high quality rugs that are sold in high quantities on western markets. If you are looking for a hardwearing rug Heriz designs are hard to beat.
