It is basically a series of knots tied by hand in rows and a certain order to create the pattern you see on the final piece. With many of the designs used for Persian rugs being very detailed it can take somebody months to finish just one rug, it all depends on the size and detail of the design. The length of time it takes would also depend on the person's experience with weaving rugs, because obviously the longer someone has been weaving this style of rug the easier they will find it to complete a piece quicker.

This form of rug making is seen as an art and now with the rugs becoming very popular with those after higher quality products the prices for Persian rugs have increased and they are seen as a fairly large export for the countries they originate from.

Over the years the cost of the rugs once completed has kept on rising this being because many people are willing and now have a higher expenditure to pay for such high quality products. With the call being fairly high for these rugs now many of the crafts people can make a full time living from weaving these rugs. There aren't that many people that weave these rugs as a part time income or hobby because it takes up a lot of time and there is a lot of money to be made from it so if they can do it to a high standard it makes sense that they do it and make a living.
