There are many different styles and designs of carpets available today. The following glossary contains information about different fabrics used to make carpets and how to maintain them.

  • Anti-Stat is a product used to reduce static electricity levels in carpets.
  • Beaters are used to remove dust and loose dirt from carpets and rugs by hand.
  • Circling is an affect that can appear on carpets that have been cleaned improperly using the rotary cleaning method.
  • Degreasers are used to remove greasy or oily marks from carpets and upholstery.
  • Electrostatic Discharge Carpets (ESD) are carpets that are designed specifically for ESD controlled environments. ESD carpets let out the minimum amount of static electricity discharges.
  • Fluffing is an undesirable affect caused by loosened fabrics at the surface of a rug or a carpet.
  • Grinning is an undesirable affect where the backing of the carpet can be seen through the pile.
  • Heavy Traffic carpets are designed for use in areas where many people pass through on a regular basis.
  • In Plant Cleaning is cleaning provided by a carpet cleaning company.
  • J-Cut is a term used to describe roughly layered carpet fibres caused by excessive yard tension.
  • Location Cleaning is cleaning where specialist equipment is brought to your home to clean carpets.
  • Mildew is caused by fungus on carpets that has been left to thrive. Mildew can cause bad odours and eventually lead to decay of carpet fibres.
  • Nap Finishing Brushes have stiff long bristles that are used to brush the fibres of a carpet in one particular direction.
  • Odour Control Agents are used to absorb and eliminate the affects of mildew and bacteria found in carpets.
  • - Pile Distortion is a term used to describe a lack of pattern or texture on the surface of a rug or carpet such as fluffing.
  • Rotary Brush Cleaning is a form of carpet cleaning using shampoos that are applied using a rotary brush.
  • Sanitizers are used to remove harmful bacteria from carpet fibres. While sanitizers arent as effective as disinfectants for removing bacteria they usually dont produce as strong an odour.
  • Truck Mounted Cleaners are used for location cleaning. The truck has tanks for water and cleaning solutions and comes equipped with a long hose to reach indoors as required.
  • Vinyl also known as PVC is used for backing carpets. It is available in tile and sheet forms to suit different surfaces.
  • Wool is one of the first fabrics used to make carpets. Wool is easy to dye and has soft fibres.
