carpet fabricThere are many different types of material used in the making of carpets dependant on the kind of carpet being made. Its not just the fabrics that vary it is also the way in which they are woven that creates the style of the carpet.

Some of the different types of fabric and materials used and how they are woven together as a piece of carpet are below with a little more information on them;

Nylon - This is very commonly used in many carpets because of the fact its very easy to dye and wears extremely well. As well as its ability to hold colours fairly well it also has properties that mean it can provide a slight stain resistance for the carpet. The cost of nylon varies as it is a petroleum based material so the price is determined by that present cost of oil.

Wool and wool blends - This natural material is used widely in carpets and when the wool is blended with a synthetic fibre it becomes even more durable. It is a fairly cheap material for carpet manufacturers to use because there is such an abundance of wool. It is hard wearing but also soft so is used largely in the softer and higher quality carpets.

fabric carpetPolypropylene - This material is very cheap so is used mainly in economy carpets it wears down fairly quickly and can also be difficult to dye. If it is woven loosely that is when it becomes weak and easily worn. If woven in a particular way and very tightly it can be very resilient and is often used in places with heavy foot wear such as entrances to offices etc. It is mainly used in industrial buildings purely because of it being cheap and the fact it can be hard wearing when woven to be so.

Polyester - This material is fairly cheap similar to nylon but it holds dye better than nylon and is very stain resistant. Although it does have these advantages it also has its downsides such as the fact it can mat and wear down fairly quickly. It is usually used in mid range quality carpets that are good quality but still reasonably priced.

Knowing which kind of material you want to use for your carpet is an important decision to make before looking for a carpet. Most people tend to have an idea of what kind of carpet they would like and what kind of material they want it to be made of because of the style of the room.
